White County, Indiana

A BioTown™ USA Initiative
Operating Wind Farms Meadow Lake Wind Farm Phase I is a 200 MW facility in the southwest corner of White County. Commissioned in 2009 by Horizon Wind Energy, an EDP Renewables Company, it consists of 121 Vestas V82 wind turbines situated on a footprint of 26,000 acres of Indiana farm land. Meadow Lake Phase II is presently being constructed and will add 100 more MW when commissioned in 2010.
Potential Wind Development While most of western White County is presently being developed for the Horizon Wind Energy Meadow Lake project, there are other areas in the northeastern portion of the county with estimated wind speeds sufficient for commercial development.
Biomass Opportunities The vast majority of land in White County is agricultural. There are many opportunities for biomass production and generation here.
Biofuel Facilities White County is home to the first waste water treatment facility in the state to grow and harvest algae for energy. Designed and constructed by AlgaeWheel, this facility is located just outside of the Town of Reynolds. The energy harvested from the algae will supply all of the demand for processing the wastewater, and will generate excess that can be converted to second generation biofuels or used as biomass to generate electricity.
Biogas Resources Located in the northeast corner of White County, the Liberty Landfill, owned and operated by Waste Management, captures the methane gas that is generated in the landfill and uses it to generate approximately 7 MW of electricity which is purchased by Wabash Valley Power and sold to various rural electric cooperatives throughout the state. The generating facility utilizes Caterpillar engine-generator sets that are manufactured at the Caterpillar factory in Lafayette, Indiana.
Workforce Development The White County Instructional Center located in Monticello offers introductory classes available through Ivy Tech Community College.
